Well this year I've decided to make my own! And it only costs a dollar or two for each one whereas the store bought brand name ones cost about 20 dollars. All you need is a plastic bucket, 3 gallon or bigger, some wire or something to hang it with, some cutters, some foam and about 10 minutes of your time.
Two of my homemade topsy turvy planters! |
First step is to cut a 3 inch hole in the bottom of the bucket, then attach wire or something to hang the pots. Next you want to cut a piece of foam about 1 inch thick and about 5 inches around. Then cut a slice in the foam to just past the center (about 3 inches in). Now take your young tomato plant and wrap the foam around the base so it covers the hole when you put it into the planter (so the dirt doesnt fall out). Now the tricky part, wrap the foam around the base of the plant and insert the plant through the pot and hanging out the bottom. Then while holding the plant in place, fill the top with dirt.
All done! Now hang it somewhere where it will get lots of sun. I find I need to water every 2 days or so, and when its really hot water every day. Water until water pours out the bottom.
Now even though the plants are growing out the bottom they will still reach for the sun so late in the season you may have to tie them up when the fruits start to get heavy. These two plants in the picture above each have about 50 or so tomatoes on them right now (cherry tomatoes).
Look at all the flowers! |
I will post more pictures very soon, the tomatoes are ripening up nicely! Also I have one that I put a strawberry plant into and its doing quite well too. Check back for pictures to come!
